The bar chart registers (1)____________ in the population of fishers in five regions of the world in 3 years; 1970, 1980 and 2000. Further to this, the table gives information on the world's top ten fish exporting countries in the year 2000.

Overall, it can be seen that fishing communities grew in size in most of the countries and regions, with Asian fishers being (2)______________ higher in number and Asian countries dominating the exporters list.

(3)______________ at the chart in more detail, we can observe that over the 30 years covered, fishing kept thriving in Asia, with fishers almost (4)__________ in number from 9 m in 1970 to 24 in 2000.

Far fewer fishing people lived in the other regions and (5)__________ in their numbers were erratic. African and N American fishermen doubled in quantity from 1970 to 1980 but their numbers plateaued from the 80s onwards: there were 2 m and 1.2 m fishers in Africa and N America respectively. In the period (6)__________, European fishing professionals fell by a half from about 500 thousand in 1970 to a quarter of a million in 1980, only to (7)___________ their original quantities in 2000. In contrast to the other areas in the study, the 30-year (8)___________ saw no changes in the quantity of S American fishers who (9)____________ a constant 1.2 m across the whole period.

The table reveals that in the year 2000, 5 out of 10 countries in the list of greatest global fish exporters were Asian, with Thailand coming on top. Norway came 2nd with the US (10)_____________ in the 3rd place. Despite their relatively small fishing contingents, European exporters did well, with Norway ranked 2nd on the list and Denmark 5th. Lastly, South Korea had the smallest share of the export market of the listed fish exporters.
