Task2 - Ethics >> Funding the Arts

"Funding the Arts"

Some people think that governments should give financial support to creative artists such as painters and musicians.

Others believe that creative artists should be funded by other sources.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

The arts are important for every country and culture around the world. Artists not only provide entertainment through music and visual arts, they also provide important comment on a country's culture. For this reason, many people believe that governments should provide financial support for the arts in our communities.

Creating a positive national identity is an important responsibility for governments. Administrations can do this by financially supporting the arts. For example, painters, musicians and writers have the opportunity to describe the national life; drawing attention to the positives and critiquing areas that may need improvement. Through paintings books and songs we can glean important understanding of the national character.

However, governments have a range of responsibilities including health and education. This means that finance for the arts is not always possible. Consequently, artists must find alternative ways of financing their careers. Art exhibitions, music festivals and book sales could provide some income although it may not be enough to support an artist's living expenses.

To conclude, it is my opinion that passionate and committed artists need financial support from the government to enable them to pursue a career in the arts. If the government provides some monetary aid, the cultural life of our countries will be richer from the contributions that artists make.
