Food hygiene is often a problem in many parts of the world. What are the causes that lead to people getting ill from the food they eat? What measures should be taken to reduce this problem?

In many countries around the world, the consumption of food is an essential but dangerous daily activity. While we must eat for energy and nutrition, the food that we put inside our bodies can be toxic. The causes of food contamination are many, and people need to be aware of them to ameliorate the problem.

There are two main contributing factors to food that is unsafe for consumption. The first cause is the careless handling of food. Edibles that are prepared in an unhygienic environment can become contaminated. For example, food handlers who do not clean their hands properly can transfer bacteria into the meals that they are preparing. The second significant reason for food poisoning is poor food storage practices. If food is not correctly sealed and stored, it can become toxic. This is particularly true for tropical countries where high temperatures can accelerate the deterioration of food.

The best way to deal with food safety issues is by setting standard operating practices. In restaurants, staff need to be aware of the correct procedures for storing food and personal hygiene. Moreover vermin such as rats and cockroaches can be controlled by keeping kitchens clean. When food preparation areas are clean, the number of pests is reduced. Another good way to limit the influence of toxins on food is to keep the ingredients fresh. Buying fresh food from the markets and consuming that food immediately will ensure that the food is clean from bacteria.

To conclude, the safe consumption of food is something that concerns us all. If people follow recommended practices, they can protect themselves from the risks inherent in food consumption.
