Task2 - Lifestyle >> Hard Work vs Other Factors

"Hard Work vs Other Factors"

Some people believe that hard work and determination are the key to success in life. However, others argue that other factors are more important. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Our world is driven increasingly by fierce competition as more people yearn for worldly success. Edison claimed that "genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration" but is this entirely true of the reality of the world we inhabit? In the following essay, I will discuss the impact of human perseverance on attaining one's goals.

Hard work is undoubtedly instrumental to success in every difficult area of life. Take education for example: anyone who has achieved a certain degree of academic fame would attest to the importance of assiduity in approaching your targets in life. This is mostly because academics need to laboriously study an already enormous body of knowledge produced and documented by generations of scholars before them. Added to this, there is the unparalleled speed at which knowledge is being generated and disseminated across the globe, making it even harder to keep abreast of cutting-edge knowledge in a given field.

On the other hand, mere learning and regurgitation of other people's findings seldom leads to tangible success. To continue using the example of academia, for a scholar to achieve recognition, she/he would have to introduce innovative ideas, or to 'push back the frontiers of human ignorance' as the hackneyed phrase has it. This 'inspiration' is said to come at unexpected moments, such as when a person is asleep or when they are engaged in a totally unrelated activity.

In conclusion, I would maintain that success arises from a combination of hard work and talent. Either one of these factors on its own would bear little or no fruit at all.
