"Secondary Curriculum"


Many high schools focus their education on mathematics and science, however, some people believe that secondary education should cover a wider range of subjects.

What is your opinion?

The education of younger generations is critical to the development of a country. Young people proceed from primary through secondary and eventually tertiary levels of education to properly prepare for life. In high schools, the curriculum often concentrates on mathematics and science. While these subjects are important, many people believe that secondary students require a broader education.

An understanding of mathematics is necessary for living in today's world. As a consequence, numeracy is seen as essential in high schools around the world. Secondary students progress from basic counting skills to trigonometry and calculus. It is true that proficiency in mathematics enables people to effectively go about their daily lives. For example, basic mathematics is used in simple transactions at the markets or in complex calculations related to structural engineering.

However, there are two main reasons why a complete education must involve some emphasis on a variety of topics. Firstly, individual students have differing interests. For instance, some students may be fascinated by the world of business while others are stimulated through lessons from history. By focusing on subjects that activate interest from students, teachers can achieve better learning outcomes. Secondly, a general knowledge of the world is becoming increasingly important. In this age of globalization, a general knowledge of the world is vital. Consequently subjects like geography and biology assist in giving secondary level students a better perspective of our world and their place in it.

To conclude, compulsory subjects such as mathematics and science are required for young people to function effectively upon graduation. If these subjects are taught along with the opportunity to study a variety of non-mandatory fields of study, secondary level students will graduate with a more rounded education.
